“This is the Land of #VanRE, this is #VanRELand…” is the current* online form assembling all of the photographs (and, in the future, videos and non-fiction writing) of my Lost in #VanRELand photography series, which is a long-term (1990-present) amateur photography project that explores the intersections between consumer culture, the built environment, the everyday, and themes of cultural constructs, colonialism, myth-building, and the search for (personal and collective) utopias, as communicated through commerce, advertising, real estate, urban planning, social media, and human behavior found in “everyday places” strewn across the metropolitan region of Vancouver, Canada, and its near and far (including online) peripheries—all places deeply marked by #VanRE (i.e. the social media hashtag for “Vancouver Real Estate”), its unfortunate genius loci.
All photographs are original, by yours truly, a.k.a. Steve Kvartz, amateur.
(*For those who have been around for longer, I have already shared parts of this work through an early personal website (i.imro.ciernobiely.com, 2000-2001), an alternate personal portfolio site ([address redacted], 2014-2024), an earlier version of this blog but under a different name and domain (thecityof.wordpress.com, 2013-2019), my original (and still active) Twitter (it’ll always be “Twitter” to me) account (@SteveKvartz, 2017-2023), as well as an unrelated “digi-performance” project blog (thusspoketgd.wordpress.com, 2018-2021) and accompanying Twitter account (@TheGreatDevice, 2017-2020), and, finally, a hyperlocal photography Instagram microblog (@northvan.northvan, 2023-present). I hope this current form is more pleasing, and comprehensive.)
